Default Apps (For Windows)

asus-vivobook-laptop

I run a dual-OS boot setup on my trustworthy ASUS VivoBook laptop.

I run Windows 10 and Fedora 40.

Here are the top-level categories to make navigation easy:

I’ve included a few noteworthy Android apps in the list.

Windows 10

File Management & Media

Total Commanderan advanced file manager, its side-by-side panel is the most useful function
Notepad++For taking notes, a bit of coding and everything text-related. I’ve been using it for over 10 years now.
AIMPA music player I'm very happy with. Somewhat similar to Winamp but more modern.
FastStone ImageViewerAn image editor with an embedded file explorer. All the functions you'd expect out of an image editor are there. The best part? The interface. It's simple, focused on functionality. No flashing, ding-ing and ping-ing bells and whistles most modern apps come loaded with.
Media Player ClassicMain video player.
VLCAlternative video player. Recognizes most video formats out of the box.
7-ZipFree to use archive manager. Handles most archives out of the box.
CalibreOpen Source e-book manager
FilezillaFTP client I use to ftp into my smartphone
ObsidianFor taking notes and mind-crunching mental explorations.
Apparently it's good for planning courses too.
AOMEI Partition AssistantCreating, resizing and removing partitions .

Software Development

Visual StudioThe almighty IDE from Microsoft. In truth, it's incredibly well done and It's a pleasure to develop software with it. Even after getting used to its quirks and (sometimes) bugs.
VS CodeAnother coding tool from Microsoft!Image Coming Soon-ish
gitSource code versioning. Also keeps track of text notes and Obsidian vaults.
GitHub DesktopUser interface on top of git

Mp3tagManages audio file tags from my music library.
Odesifor very basic music composition, can export as MIDI and import in Ableton or FL Studio

Audio And Video Editing And Conversions

CamtasiaA very capable video editor. It has its quirks, but once you get used to it, it grows on you.
Adobe AuditionThe industry standard audio editor. I edit my voiceovers and podcasts with it.
AudacityA free open source audio editor. Mostly I use it for the excellent audio compression (better than Audition)
Adobe After EffectsI use this to render simple YouTube videos from my voiceover recordings.
HandbrakeConverts between video formats or resizes large videos based on presets.
ffmpegCommand-line utility to converts to/from audio and video formats.

Web & Services

Brave – as a go-to browser

WhatsApp – communication with the loved ones

Canva – free image design.

Pixabay – for license free images.

Gaming

I used to be a gamer in my 20’s. But now there’s only one game I play, and that’s the spiritual successor of Diablo II’s:

Path Of Exile hack and slash action RPG

Awakened PoE Trade shows item prices in Path Of Exile

Path Of Building (Community) allows you to plan your build in Path Of Exile or import other players’ builds so you can learn from them.

Android

File Manager+ – a very capable and very simple file manager. Can turn into a FTP server I can log into to get the files from my phone

Notepad – simple notes – for taking notes on the go; has very few features, exactly what I need from a notes-taking app

RecForge II – the reason I love this app is that it supports my Blue Yeti microphone via OTG; I can plug in my Blue Yeti microphone and record voiceovers on my Lenovo Tab 8. When using a tablet, there’s no background noise to remove. Laptops have fans, PC’s have fans when using a tablet. The recording quality is excellent and it helps my voiceover business.

Fedora 40

KDEOne of the classic Desktop Managers available on Linux distributions
ClementineOne of the many music players available on Linux distributions, in general
